tools and techniques flyerSeptember 20th 2003 saw us visiting the RTI Access Space in Sheffield as part of the Tools & Techniques event. It was organised to show that Linux can be used for a wide variety of multimedia purposes, and our contribution was a video workshop. We've been looking into video editing on Linux for some time now, and reckon that Cinerella is the best app yet. It's a bit tricky, but is a multi-track, realtime effect, compositing capable non linear video editor that whilst not as pretty as the premieres or final cut pros, is open source and completely free! It works well with Kino, a simpler app, and the combination of the two can enable firewire in and out to DV cam, and export in MPEG for web

A free open source alternative to Windows and Mac video editing would be fantastic for low/no budget collectives, and we intend on exploring how this can be implemented. The saving of the OS and software cost could be ploughted back into getting a fairly high spec machine if high res video is required, but if you're making videos for web, then a lower spec machine will cope.Render farm support comes by default so those skipped 486s can be saved and reused.
